Enraged villagers torched two Assam Rifles Vehicles in Manipur after an army major allegedly shot dead a villager in Kangpokpi district on Friday night, according to reports.
As said by the villagers, the incident took place in Chalwa village, about 50 km west of Kangpokpi district headquarters.
The deceased has been identified as Mangboilal Lhouvum of Chalwa village under Kangpokpi police station. Lhouvum was a daily wage labourer and a father of two children.
The incident enraged the villagers and a mob stormed the Assam Rifles post situated nearby Chalwa village and torch two vehicles.
According to reports, an officer of the rank of major, who is attached to the 44 Assam Rifles at Banglabung, an adjoining village of Chalwa village was taken to police custody after the pressure from various civil bodies including the villagers.
The reason was not immediately known what exactly led to Friday night’s incident at Chalwa village. According to the villagers, the major of the 44 AR post along with three of his jawans came to the Chalwa on late Friday night to carry out an operation.
