With just a day in between, Tokyo Olympics is all set to begin the Summer Games. This year, the Summer Games promise to be more fashionable and glamourous than ever.
The Games will see stylish athletes from around the world and many of them are on the radar of fashion insiders. The athletes that will make a fashion statement as well as prove their worth in the game include, US gymnast Simone Biles, Bahamian sprinter Shaunae Miller-Uibo and British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith.
Biles who appeared on the cover of a fashion magazine in the name, "the Gentlewoman" in 2017, and on WSJ magazine this month has proved in the last five years, her prowess that extends far beyond the gymnastics floor.
The Olympic gymnast has worked with several major fashion brands and companies like Nike. The 24-year-old gymnast made her entry in the Games Village in style with a tie-dye T-shirt by Polo Ralph Lauren that featured "Team USA graphics".
For shoes, the Olympian went for white chunky sneakers and they featured a lace-up silhouette and thick platform soles.
Shaunae Miller-Uibo stands out from a distance with her green or pink hair. Apart from being the defending Olympian champion in the 400 m, her Instagram feed has an equal share for gowns and sports bras.
British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith has a passion for fashion. From glossy magazine cover shoots to seminal partnerships with the likes of Off White and Louis Vuitton, she regularly walks red carpets in designer creations.
Dina's expressive catwalks have made her the darling of the fashion world and her enthusiasm to explore this creative field is palpable.
Smith's hair is also significant. On the track, scrunchies, secure ponytails and buns of braids, twists, or natural hair, she has done it all. She flew to Tokyo after doing an eight-page fashion shoot for British Vogue, in which she wore sequins, heels and lip gloss. The cover of the shoot calls it "Fashion's love affair with Dina Asher-Smith."
This year, designers have also played a major role in creating outfits for the teams. Telfar, the brand that created 2021's most fashionable bag, is working on the Liberian team's outfits.
Meanwhile, for team USA, Kim Kardashian's shapewear brand, Skims will provide underwear and loungewear for all female athletes across the Olympics and Paralympics.
