Amid the ongoing border row, the Government of Mizoram has filed a theft case against Assam Police.
Mizoram government has accused Assam Police personnel of stealing construction materials from a project site near the border between the two Northeastern states.
H Lalthlangliana, Kolasib Deputy Commissioner (DC) has written to his counterpart in Hailakandi district of Assam and stated that the Assam Police personnel entered Mizoram territory at Zophai near Bairabi and allegedly stole some construction materials, including iron rods, from a bridge construction site.
The area shares border with Hailakandi. The DC said that the incident happened on August 20.
Lalthlangliana mentioned that the construction of the bridge is being undertaken to connect main road with the paddy field owned by Pu Ch Chhunga, the first Chief Minister of Mizoram.
The case against the Assam Police personnel has been filed at the Bairabi Police Station.
"I would like to reiterate that this incident may not be considered boundary issue as it is ongoing construction works for connecting road. However, government servant committing as act that can be interpreted as theft towards government property is very disappointing and considered very serious," the letter said.
Lalthlangliana further urged Hailakandi DC to take necessary action in this regard.
It may be mentioned that Zophia is one of the flashpoints of border dispute between Mizoram and Assam.
On the other hand, Hailakandi Police refuted the allegations and blamed the Mizoram administration of making false accusations and undertaking construction activities on the Assam side.
