The Uttar Pradesh government has denied permission to a Congress delegation led by Rahul Gandhi to visit Lakhimpur Kheri.
Citing the prohibitory orders imposed in the area under Section 144 of the CrPC, the Congress delegation was denied entry. The State government has also deployed police to stop opposition leaders from travelling to Tikunia, about 70 km away from the district headquarters of Lakhimpur Kheri.
Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal had earlier sought permission for the Rahul Gandhi-led Congress delegation to visit the area.
Rahul Gandhi along with Sachin Pilot, Charanjit Singh Channi, Bhupesh Baghel and KC Venugopal are expected to head for Lakhimpur Kheri are expected to visit the violence-hit area.
The violence took place after Union Minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra, allegedly run over a group of farmers protesting in front of his vehicle in Lakhimpur Kheri on Sunday, killing four farmers on the spot.
After the incident clashes broke out leading to the deaths of four more people.
Apart from Congress leaders, other Opposition leaders from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Samajwadi Party and BSP, have also been detained by the UP government and restricted from going to Lakhimpur Kheri.
It is to be mentioned, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, who was detained early on Monday, continues to remain in detention after she tried to reach Lakhimpur Kheri.
