Ashish Das, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator from Tripura, shaved his head, took a dip in the Ganga, saying he was performing an act of penance before joining West Bengal’s ruling party.
Das has been in touch with Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) for months. He also offered prayers at Kalighat’s Kali temple close to chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s home.
Das represents the Surma constituency and has time and again severely criticised Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb.
Hailing Banerjee, Das it would be a matter of pride for every Bengali if she becomes the Prime Minister in the future.
The TMC is trying to make inroads in Tripura as the party is planning to contest the 2023 assembly polls.
Das told reporters in Kolkata that he had put his faith in the BJP to end the "misrule of the Left Front government" led by Manik Sarkar. "It was a mistake. I will keep my head shaved till the BJP government is ousted from Tripura in 2023," he said.
