A 62-year old man allegedly blew up himself and his estranged wife in a busy marketplace in Mizoram’s Lunglei district, as informed by police on Wednesday.

The accused is identified as Rohmingliana and according to police, it is suspected that gelatin was used in the blast, which was allegedly concealed inside his garments.

The incident took place in Lunglei at around 12:15 pm on Tuesday in front of the office of the high-power committee (district planning board of Lunglei), where the victim, Pi Lalthianghlimi (61), was selling vegetables with her 40-year-old daughter from her first marriage.

Reportedly, the accused was the second husband of the woman and the couple had parted ways around a year ago.

The accused came to the area and first sat down next to his ex-wife and requested her to roll him a local cigarette, to which her mother obliged, as said by the daughter.

After he lit the cigarette, the accused allegedly pretended to be dizzy due to fever and pounced on the woman, which was followed by a loud explosion that cost two lives.

The couple originally hailed from Thiltlang village in the district and migrated to Lunglei town decades ago.
