Wrestler Anshu Malik on Thursday scripted history as she became the first Indian woman to win a silver medal in the World Championships.

The 20-year-old lost her 57kg final bout 1-4 to 2016 Olympic champion Helen Lousie Marouli in Oslo, Norway.

India's first-ever woman finalist at the World Championship of Wrestling, Malik began in an aggressive fashion with positive intent. She led 1-0 at the breather but the bout changed in dramatic fashion in the second. Maroulis got Anshu in her arm grip and pulled her down to complete a take-down move to take a 2-1 lead. She kept Malik's right arm under a tight grip and kept twisting to get an 'exposure' point, making it 4-1.

Malik on Wednesday had defeated European silver medallist Solomiia Vynnyk of Ukraine in the women’s 57kg semi-finals.

She is a Cadet World champion and a junior Worlds silver medallist. Malik was the third Indian to reach the final of the World championships after 2010 champion Sushil Kumar and 2018 silver medallist Bajrang Punia.

Meanwhile, another Indian grappler Sarita Mor(59kg) also won a bronze medal for the nation.
