Guwahati-based neurosurgeon Dr Navanil Barua, who was arrested on Sunday by Dispur Police in the infamous Rajkanya Baruah case, was released on bail nearly six hours after his arrest.
Dr Baruah was arrested under IPC Sections 102, 212 and 120 (B) after three-day marathon interrogation on charges of helping model Rajkanya to avoid police investigation. All charges are bailable offences.
Rajkanya has been accused of knocking down eight road workers while driving her Chevrolet at a high speed in an inebriated state. The accident took place at the Rukminigaon area of the city past midnight on October 2.
Dr Barua had allegedly admitted the 2016 Miss India finalist to the ICU of the GNRC Hospital in Dispur on October 3 by signing a “fake medical certificate” about a head injury. The model had skipped police interrogation citing that certificate.
Police have then sought a medical board report on Rajkanya. Based on the report submitted by the six-member board of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, Rajkanya was re-arrested on Wednesday from the ICU of the GNRC Hospital. The medical report stated that the model has no health complications and is completely fine.
On Friday, the Kamrup (M) Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Guwahati sent Rajkanya to 14-day judicial custody.
