The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Tuesday arrested the driver of one of the SUV’s that was part of the convoy which ran over a group of protesting farmers on October 3, which resulted in killing eight people.
The accused is identified as Shekhar Bharti, who is alleged to be behind one of the three vehicles involved in the incident, as per reports.
According to reports, the SUV was owned by Ankit Das, who is a close aide of Ashish Mishra, Union minister Ajay Mishra’s son, and nephew of former Rajya Sabha MP and UPA minister Akhilesh Das.
The SIT also took custody of Ashish Mishra on Tuesday and was lodged in Lakhimpur Kheri jail. A local court has sent Ashish on three-day police custody on Monday, for not cooperating with the police.
Along with Mishra and Bharti, two others - Luvkush Pandey and Ashish Pandey were also arrested.
It is to be mentioned that while four protesters and allegedly a journalist were run over by the SUV, killing four farmers on the spot, three others were killed in the subsequent violence.
