    BJP candidate and incumbent Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal registers a massive victory in Majuli by defeating Congress candidate Rajiv Lochan Pegu by over 42,787 votes. Sonowal, who represented the island constituency for the second time has broken his own record by receiving 70,560 votes. He won the 2016 Assembly Elections with a margin of 18,923 votes.

    8.00 AM: Counting of votes begins amid Covid-19 restrictions

    The counting of votes begins for 126-member Assam Assembly. The numbers of counting halls have been increased from 143 in the 2016 Assembly Election to 331 this time. A total of 946 candidates - 872 males and 74 females - were in the fray for the three-phased assembly elections in the state.



    7.50 AM: What do exit polls say?

    Most exit polls have predicted a comfortable victory for BJP. India Today-Axis My India says that the saffron alliance with 75-85 seats, while it has given 40-50 seats to the Congress. Today's Chanakya has given 70 seats to the BJP-led alliance and 50 seats for the Congress-led 'Grand Alliance'. On the other hand, Republic-CNX gave the BJP alliance 74-84 and the opposition 40-50 seats. Times-C-Voter: Times- C-Voter predicts 65 seats for the NDA and 59 for the UPA.

    Parties are fighting in the Assam Assembly election this time comprising Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP)-led alliance with Asom Gana Parishad(AGP) and United People's Party Liberation(UPPL), Congress-led 'Mahajot' with All India United Democratic Front(AIUDF), Bodoland Peoples'' Front (BPF), CPI(M), CPI, CPI(ML) Liberation, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM).


    7.32 AM: The counting of votes for Assam assembly elections to be held today. 


    7.00 AM: According to the Election Commission of India, Assam recorded 82.04% overall voter turnout in the State Assembly election 2021, polling for which was held in three phases – March 27, April 1 and April 6.
