Supermarket explosion in Mexico’s Sonora

At least 23 people were killed and 11 injured after an explosion ripped through a Waldo’s supermarket in Mexico’s Sonora state. Authorities confirmed that several of the victims were children. Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo expressed deep sorrow in a video message, stating that emergency, security, and health teams responded swiftly to control the situation and save lives.

Governor Durazo said he has ordered a thorough and transparent investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and identify those responsible. Local security officials indicated that the blast did not appear to be an attack or an act of violence against civilians. “No one will face this pain alone,” Durazo assured, adding that the injured are receiving treatment in local hospitals.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum shared her condolences on X (formerly Twitter), extending heartfelt sympathies to the victims’ families. She said she has spoken with Governor Durazo and offered federal support. President Sheinbaum also instructed Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez to send a team to assist those affected by the tragedy.
