Three Army personnel lost their lives in a major avalanche at the Siachen base camp in Ladakh.

Three Army personnel were killed after a major avalanche struck the Siachen Glacier base camp, officials confirmed on Tuesday, September 9. The incident occurred in the early hours, when a large mass of snow came crashing down on the high-altitude camp, trapping soldiers under the debris. Rescue teams were immediately pressed into action, but extreme weather conditions and treacherous terrain hampered operations.

Despite swift evacuation efforts, three soldiers lost their lives while others sustained injuries. The injured have been shifted to a nearby military hospital for treatment, and their condition is being closely monitored. The Army said specialized teams, including avalanche rescue experts, were deployed to carry out search and recovery in the affected area.

The Siachen Glacier, often called the world’s highest battlefield, has long posed severe challenges due to sub-zero temperatures, high winds and frequent avalanches. Over the years, more soldiers have died from the harsh weather than from combat in the region. The latest tragedy has once again highlighted the extreme risks faced by troops serving in the glacier to safeguard the nation’s borders.
