Renowned character actor Achyut Potdar, who became a household name with his memorable performance in 3 Idiots, passed away on Monday, August 18, at the age of 91. He breathed his last at Jupiter Hospital in Thane due to age-related health complications.
Potdar’s career in cinema and television spanned over four decades, during which he appeared in more than 125 films and close to 100 television serials. A familiar face in supporting roles, he was celebrated for his natural screen presence and the ability to leave an impact even with brief appearances. One of his most beloved performances came in Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots (2009), where his dialogue “Kehna kya chahte ho?” became an instant classic and continues to be fondly remembered by fans.
Before entering the entertainment industry, Potdar worked as an executive with the Indian Oil Corporation. He pursued acting after taking voluntary retirement, proving that passion can lead to a second innings in life. His late entry into films did not deter his success; in fact, it gave him a distinguished identity as a reliable character actor in Bollywood.
Colleagues and filmmakers expressed grief over his passing. Director Hansal Mehta shared that it was a “privilege to work with him,” while several actors and fans recalled his humility and dedication to the craft. Social media platforms were flooded with tributes celebrating his long-standing contribution to Indian cinema.
Potdar’s last rites were performed on August 19 in Thane, where family members, friends, and admirers gathered to bid farewell to the veteran artist.
With his demise, the film and television industry has lost a performer whose quiet strength and memorable screen presence made him one of the most endearing character actors of Indian cinema.
