The quake was felt across Afghanistan, Pakistan and northern India -- including Delhi-NCR

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck southeastern Afghanistan early Monday, September 1, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremor occurred at 00:47:41 IST with its epicentre recorded at latitude 34.50N and longitude 70.81E, at a depth of 160 km.

Authorities in Afghanistan confirmed casualties, with Naqibullah Rahimi, spokesperson for the Nangarhar Public Health Department, reporting that at least nine people lost their lives and 15 others sustained injuries. Rescue teams were deployed as officials assessed the damage in the affected regions.

The quake’s impact was felt beyond Afghanistan, with tremors shaking parts of Pakistan and northern India, including Delhi-NCR. Residents rushed out of buildings as strong vibrations spread across the region. Several aftershocks, measuring 4.7, 4.3, 5.0, and 5.0 in magnitude, followed the main quake, adding to the panic.
