The Civil Aviation Ministry informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday, July 21, that nine show cause notices have been issued to Air India in connection with five separate safety violations reported over the past six months. The ministry also confirmed that enforcement action has been completed in one of the cases.
The disclosure came in response to a series of queries raised by Members of Parliament, amid growing concerns over aviation safety.
Following last month’s Boeing Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad, which claimed 260 lives and left 81 injured, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) launched a detailed inspection of Air India’s Boeing 787-8/9 fleet.
“Out of the total 33 aircraft in Air India’s Boeing 787-8/9 fleet, 31 operational aircraft were inspected, during which minor issues were found in eight aircraft. These were addressed, and the aircraft were cleared for operation post-rectification,” Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu stated in a written reply to BJP MP Ashokrao Shankarrao Chavan. The remaining two aircraft are currently undergoing scheduled maintenance, he added.
The government’s response comes amid heightened scrutiny of airline safety protocols and the DGCA’s enforcement mechanisms following the Ahmedabad tragedy.
