Nine workers are trapped inside a 300-foot deep coal mine located in the industrial town of Umrangso in Dima Hasao district of Assam, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday, January 6.
Ganga Bahadur Shreth (Nepal), Hussain Ali (Darrang), Jakir Hussain (Darrang), Sarpa Barman (Kokrajhar), Mustafa Seikh (Darrang), Khusi Mohan Rai(Kokrajhar), Sanjit Sarkar (West Bengal), Lijan Magar (Dima Hasao) and Sarat Goyary (Sonitpur) are trapped inside the coal mine, according to a list shared by the CM on X.
The CM stated that personnel from the SDRF and NDRF have been deployed to the accident site to carry out search and rescue operations, and assistance from the Army has also been requested.
Rescue teams on the ground are facing significant challenges due to the unstable structure of the mine and the continuous influx of water. Reports indicate that the workers were trapped by a sudden flood, leaving them with no time to escape.
Witnesses at the scene described scenes of panic as the water levels rose rapidly, blocking all possible escape routes.
