South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was arrested on Wednesday, January 15, by the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) for High Ranking Officials, marking the first time a sitting South Korean leader has been detained.
This was the second attempt to arrest the impeached President, following a failed attempt on January 3 when agents from the Presidential Security Service blocked investigators from entering Yoon’s residence.
In contrast to the first attempt, the CIO reported that no individuals or security staff obstructed the execution of the arrest this time, and there were no major physical confrontations. Around 3,000 police officers were involved in securing access to Yoon’s compound, according to Yonhap news agency.
