Meet Abhay Singh, the IITian Baba who quit science for spirituality

At the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, the world’s largest religious gathering hosted in Prayagraj, millions of devotees have converged to take a sacred dip at the Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mystical Saraswati rivers meet. Amid the throngs of spiritual seekers, ascetics, and sages, one figure has emerged as a focal point for both devotees and social media alike: An IIT graduate-turned-sage, now gaining recognition as the ‘IITian Baba’.

The man behind this intriguing persona is Abhey Singh, a Haryana native who traded his scientific pursuits for a life devoted to spirituality. Often referred to as ‘Engineer Baba’ by those attending the Kumbh, Singh has a unique story that stands out in a sea of spiritual narratives.

In an interview, the IITian Baba revealed his journey from science to spirituality. When the interviewer noted his eloquent way of speaking, Baba casually disclosed his academic background, leaving everyone stunned.

Singh shared his unconventional journey, saying he left the path of science for spirituality. He claimed to have completed his aerospace engineering degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay.

He added that he lived in Mumbai for four years before shifting his focus to photography and the arts, even drawing parallels with the film ‘3 Idiots.’

Singh secured a job offer through campus placements. He worked briefly in the corporate world before realising that his true calling lay elsewhere.
