Union Health Minister J P Nadda informed the Rajya Sabha that India has successfully met the National Health Policy (NHP) 2017 goal of lowering the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) to 100 per lakh live births by 2020. The country is also on track to reach the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target of an MMR of 70 by 2030.

In response to an inquiry, Nadda stated that according to the Sample Registration System (SRS) published by the Registrar General of India (RGI), the nation’s current Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) stands at 97 per one lakh live births.

He noted that there has been a notable decrease of 33 points in the MMR, dropping from 130 during 2014-2016 to 97 in 2018-2020.
