The NPCI will start delinking UPI IDs linked to inactive mobile numbers from April 1, 2025, potentially disrupting digital payments for affected users

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has said that from April 1, 2025, it will start delinking UPI IDs linked with inactive mobile numbers. This may affect users who use Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and other UPI apps for transactions if their registered mobile numbers are inactive.

1. What does this imply for users?

If your phone number has been inactive for a significant amount of time, banks will erase it from their records, and UPI services will be suspended for the account. Banks are doing this to avert technical errors in the banking system and minimise the risk of fraud, especially when reassigned numbers remain associated with outdated bank accounts.

2. Who may be impacted?

  • Customers who have updated their mobile numbers but not their bank accounts
  • Customers who continue to use UPI services use inoperative or re-allocated mobile numbers
  • Customers who relinquished their SIM cards without having updated their bank information.

3. How To Keep Your UPI Active?

  • Check if your mobile number is active by calling or messaging someone.
  • Ensure you receive SMS alerts and OTPs from your bank.
  • Update your UPI-linked mobile number via net banking, UPI apps, ATMs, or by visiting your bank branch.
