IMD predicts heatwave days to double across india this year

Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 40.5°C, one of the highest in the country, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Ridge in Delhi recorded 40.1°C, which was 6.3°C above normal. Several states also reported soaring temperatures, with multiple locations crossing 40°C.

IMD has predicted an increase in heatwave days across Northwest India. Normally, the region experiences five to six heatwave days in a season, but this year, it could witness 10 to 12 days.

“We are expecting slightly above normal heatwave conditions, especially over West and Central India. Generally, Northwest India sees around 5 to 6 heatwave days. This year, we expect 10 to 12 days, which is double the normal,” said IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy. She clarified that this is a seasonal forecast and does not mean every day will be hotter than normal.
