In today’s geopolitical landscape, naval power encompasses much more than just military strength. Countries are increasingly leveraging soft power strategies such as hydrography, meteorology, oceanography, and disaster preparedness to exert their influence.

Strategically located at the intersection of global maritime trade, India has subtly established itself as a reliable partner in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), promoting regional stability and security through active engagement in hydrographic and meteorological diplomacy.

India’s involvement in hydrographic diplomacy is broad, methodical, and highly cooperative. Through detailed hydrographic surveys, India has assisted countries in the Indian Ocean Region in defining maritime boundaries, overseeing maritime resources, and realizing economic opportunities.

In a significant development, India’s hydrographic support enabled Mauritius to extend its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) by an impressive 1.3 million square kilometers. This expansion not only enhanced Mauritius’ economic opportunities but also helped reduce maritime conflicts by clearly delineating territorial waters, which is crucial for stabilizing regional relations.
