Russia has announced a three-day ceasefire in Ukraine from May 8-10

Russia has declared a three-day ceasefire in Ukraine from May 8 to 10, aligning with its Victory Day celebrations commemorating the end of World War II.

In a statement, the Kremlin emphasized that it expects Ukraine to observe the truce as well, warning that any violations by Ukrainian forces would prompt a “proportionate and effective” military response.

President Vladimir Putin ordered the suspension of hostilities on “humanitarian grounds”, with the ceasefire scheduled to begin at midnight on May 8 (2100 GMT, May 7) and extend through May 10.

“Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow this example. In the event of violations of the truce by the Ukrainian side, the Russian armed forces will give an adequate and effective response,” the Kremlin said in its statement.

This announcement comes as U.S. President Donald Trump intensifies efforts to mediate a peace agreement in the region. Prior to this, Putin had consistently rejected a full and unconditional ceasefire, insisting it be contingent upon a halt to Western arms deliveries to Ukraine and a stop to Ukraine’s military mobilization.
