As 'Boycott Turkey' gains momentum, Turkish broadcaster TRT World's X account withheld in India

India has blocked the X (formerly Twitter) account of TRT World, the international news platform funded by the Turkish government, citing concerns over the spread of misinformation and content deemed hostile to the country’s national interests.

Users in India attempting to access TRT World’s profile now see a notice stating: “Account Withheld. This account has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand.”

The move comes amid heightened tensions following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which prompted a retaliatory Indian military operation – Operation Sindoor – targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

The blocking of TRT World also aligns with a growing domestic push in India to boycott Turkish goods and services. This sentiment intensified after reports emerged that Pakistan had deployed Turkish-made Songar drones in its attempted strikes on Indian targets.

Indian officials have long accused TRT World of promoting narratives sympathetic to separatist movements and of consistently publishing content critical of India’s internal and external policy decisions.
