Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions surged to an all-time high in May 2025, with the platform recording 18.68 billion transactions worth Rs 25.14 trillion, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on Sunday. On a year-on-year basis, UPI transactions jumped 33 per cent in volume and 23 per cent in value. The previous record was set in March 2025, with 18.3 billion transactions and Rs 24.77 trillion in value. Daily transaction volumes also grew marginally from 596 million in April to 602 million in May, while the daily value rose from Rs 79,831 crore to Rs 81,106 crore.

Other digital payment platforms also showed positive trends. Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) recorded 464 million transactions in May, up 3 per cent from 449 million in April, with the transaction value climbing from Rs 6.22 trillion to Rs 6.41 trillion. However, daily IMPS volumes dipped slightly from 14.98 million to 14.96 million, along with a marginal decline in daily value from Rs 20,722 crore to Rs 20,673 crore. Compared to May 2024, IMPS volumes were down 17 per cent, but value was up by 6 per cent.

FASTag transactions also saw notable growth, rising 5 per cent to 404 million in May from 383 million in April, while the transaction value increased 4 per cent to Rs 7,087 crore. On a year-on-year basis, FASTag volumes were up 16 per cent and value rose 20 per cent. The number of daily FASTag transactions rose from 12.75 million to 13.05 million, with the daily transaction value increasing from Rs 227 crore to Rs 229 crore.

Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS) usage also climbed during the month. Transactions rose 11 per cent to 105 million in May from 95 million in April, with the total transaction value growing 8 per cent to Rs 28,703 crore. Daily AePS transactions increased to 3.37 million, with a corresponding daily value of Rs 926 crore, up from 3.18 million transactions and Rs 887 crore in April. Compared to the same month last year, AePS volumes rose 16 per cent and transaction value jumped 23 per cent.

The latest figures reflect sustained growth and adoption of digital payment systems across India, driven largely by UPI and supported by gains in other platforms like IMPS, FASTag, and AePS.
