Elon Musk's Starlink gets govt nod to launch satellite internet in India: Report

Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet venture, has received a crucial licence from India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT), paving the way for its commercial rollout in the country, according to news agency PTI.

This long-awaited approval marks a significant milestone for Starlink, which has been trying to enter the Indian market since 2022. The company faced multiple delays due to regulatory and national security concerns. With this licence, Starlink becomes the third company authorized to offer satellite broadband services in India, joining Eutelsat’s OneWeb and Reliance Jio’s satellite division.

Starlink now moves a step closer to delivering high-speed internet across India, especially in remote and underserved regions where traditional infrastructure is limited. The move is expected to boost digital connectivity in rural areas.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s Project Kuiper is still awaiting regulatory clearance to operate in India.

Though neither Starlink nor the DoT has issued an official statement, this development is seen as a game-changer for India’s internet landscape, with the potential to significantly expand access to affordable and reliable internet across the country.
