In a shocking incident, a 24-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped at a law college in Kolkata. Three individuals, including a former student and two current students of a law college in Kasba, a suburb of Kolkata, have been arrested in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a female law student on the college premises.
The incident reportedly took place on the evening of June 25, between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm. Following the victim’s complaint, Kolkata Police launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of two accused – Zaib Ahmed (19) and Manojit Mishra (31) – from the Talbagan area on June 26. Based on their interrogation, a third suspect, Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), a former student of the college, was taken into custody on June 27 from his residence.
All three accused have had their mobile phones seized as part of the investigation. A preliminary medical examination of the victim was conducted at Calcutta National Medical College (CNMC), and witness statements have also been recorded, according to reports.
A statement from the Kolkata Police confirmed the arrests and stated: “The accused shall be produced before the Alipore court for remand.”
The three accused were presented before the in-charge Chief Judicial Magistrate at Alipore on June 27. Chief Prosecutor Sourin Ghosal said that the prosecution cited corroborating medical evidence and the victim’s statement while seeking police custody. The court granted custody until July 1, 2025, to allow for further investigation.
Among the accused is Mishra, who is reportedly affiliated with the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the Trinamool Congress. The case is being handled by the South 24 Parganas police jurisdiction, and the investigation is ongoing.
Reacting to the incident, BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya termed the event “horrific.” Referencing the recent RG Kar Hospital incident, Malviya stated that crimes against women continue unabated in West Bengal. He affirmed the BJP’s solidarity with the victim’s family and commitment to ensuring justice for all accused.
