The Kolkata Police on Saturday, June 28, arrested a security guard of South Kolkata Law College in connection with the gang-rape of a 24-year-old first-year law student on the college campus. This marks the fourth arrest in the case, following the earlier detention of three individuals, including the prime accused – a former student and Trinamool Congress student wing leader.
The incident occurred on June 25 inside the college’s guard room and came to light only on June 27, triggering widespread public outrage.
According to the survivor, the main gate of the college had been locked at the time of the assault. She alleged that the security guard, Pinaki Banerjee, was instructed by the accused to remain outside the room while the assault took place. Despite her repeated cries for help, the guard did not intervene.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that Banerjee was present on campus during the incident and failed to report it to either the college administration or the police. His inaction and negligence were confirmed during questioning, leading to his arrest.
Police said the survivor was raped by the prime accused – Monojit Mishra, a practicing lawyer and former unit president of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) at the college – while two other students, Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20), allegedly stood by and watched. Mishra was arrested on June 25, followed by the arrests of Ahmed and Mukherjee on June 26.
The woman told police that the attack followed her rejection of a marriage proposal from Mishra, who reportedly recorded the assault and later used the video to blackmail her. She had come to the campus to submit an exam form when she was forcibly taken to the guard room, undressed, and assaulted.
A medical examination has corroborated the survivor’s account, revealing signs of forced penetration along with bite marks and nail scratches on her body.
