A 25-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his girlfriend by slitting her throat in full public view, in front of her father, in Meghalaya’s Eastern West Khasi Hills district, police said on Tuesday.
The gruesome incident took place on Monday evening at the Mairang Pyndengumiong village market, where the victim had gone with her father to sell farm produce.
The deceased has been identified as Phyrnailin Kharsyntiew, a resident of Mawkhap village.
According to police officials, the accused approached the woman and her father at the market and began arguing with her. Eyewitnesses told police that the argument suddenly escalated, and the man took out a sharp weapon and slit the woman’s throat.
The victim was rushed to Mairang Civil Hospital, but doctors declared her brought dead.
As the accused tried to flee the scene, locals managed to apprehend him and handed him over to the police.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation. “The motive appears to be a personal dispute, but we are exploring all possible angles,” a senior officer said.
The victim’s father told investigators that the accused was furious after his daughter decided to end their relationship.
Further investigation is underway.
