Nimisha Priya was handed a death sentence by a Yemeni court in connection with the murder of a Yemen national with whom she had entered into a business partnership but ties later turned sour.

Nimisha Priya, a 37-year-old nurse from Kerala who has been on death row in Yemen, is reportedly set to be executed on July 16, according to media reports published on Tuesday, July 8.

Priya was sentenced to death after being convicted of murdering Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mehdi. The two had partnered to establish a medical clinic—mandatory under Yemeni law for foreign nationals seeking to work in the country. Reports allege that Priya sedated Talal in an attempt to retrieve her passport, which he had reportedly confiscated. However, he died from a drug overdose.

Following his death, Priya and a Yemeni associate, identified as Hanan, are alleged to have dismembered the body and concealed it in a water tank.

Baskaran, a key negotiator engaged in dialogue with both Yemeni authorities and Talal’s family, confirmed that a formal execution order has been issued by the public prosecutor and forwarded to the prison. Despite the gravity of the situation, he noted that avenues for last-minute intervention remain open. He urged the Indian government to act swiftly to help secure a reprieve.
