Jasprit Bumrah delivered a scintillating bowling performance on Day 2 of the third Test at Lord’s, etching his name into the history books with a stunning five-wicket haul that not only earned him a place on the iconic honours board but also saw him surpass the legendary Kapil Dev.
Bumrah claimed his 15th five-wicket haul in Test cricket – and his 13th away from home – overtaking Kapil Dev’s long-standing record for the most five-wicket hauls in overseas Tests by an Indian bowler. The milestone came in dramatic fashion as the ace pacer tore through England’s top order in a fiery morning spell that helped India regain momentum in the match.
The highlight of Bumrah’s spell was a peach of a delivery that uprooted Ben Stokes’ stumps, dismissing the England skipper for 44. He then produced another gem to clean bowl Joe Root for just 11 – the 11th time Bumrah has dismissed the former England captain in Test cricket. Chris Woakes followed next, caught behind for a golden duck, with the decision confirmed via DRS after substitute wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel took a sharp catch.
Bumrah’s burst left England in trouble at 271/7 after a strong start. However, a resilient 84-run stand between Jamie Smith (51) and Brydon Carse helped the hosts recover and push past the 350-mark by lunch, ending the session on a more stable footing.
India struck soon after the break, with Mohammed Siraj removing Smith for 51 to break the partnership. Bumrah returned to finish the job, crashing Jofra Archer’s stumps to complete his five-wicket haul and bring England’s innings to a close.
This performance not only underlined Bumrah’s brilliance with the red ball but also solidified his standing among India’s greatest fast bowlers – now with more overseas five-wicket hauls than any other Indian. His name joins an elite list on the Lord’s honours board, becoming the 15th Indian to achieve that distinction.
