Badminton stars Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap have decided to separate after nearly 7 years of marriage

Indian badminton icon Saina Nehwal has announced her separation from husband and fellow shuttler Parupalli Kashyap, bringing an end to a relationship that spanned over a decade and a marriage of nearly seven years.

The 2012 Olympic bronze medallist shared the news on Sunday, July 13, through a heartfelt post on Instagram. “Life takes us in different directions sometimes. After much thought and consideration, Kashyap Parupalli and I have decided to part ways. We’re choosing peace, growth, and healing—for ourselves and each other. I’m grateful for the memories and wish nothing but the best moving forward,” Saina wrote, asking fans and well-wishers to respect their privacy during this period.

Kashyap, a 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist and former top international player, is yet to issue a public statement in response.

The couple, who trained together at the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad, had long been one of Indian badminton’s most admired pairs. Their relationship transitioned from close friendship and sporting camaraderie to marriage in 2018.

Following his retirement from competitive play, Kashyap took on a new role as Saina’s coach and mentor. Their on-court partnership flourished, particularly during Saina’s attempted comeback from a series of injuries post-2016. Under Kashyap’s guidance, she pulled off notable performances – including a memorable win over PV Sindhu at the 2019 National Championships.

Saina last appeared in a professional tournament in June 2023. Though she has remained away from the competitive circuit since then, the 35-year-old has yet to officially announce her retirement from the sport.

The separation marks a personal crossroads for two of India’s most accomplished badminton players, whose journey together helped shape the narrative of modern Indian badminton.
