Legendary Tamil filmmaker and actor Velu Prabhakaran passed away at a hospital in Chennai on Friday, July 18, following a prolonged illness. Known for his bold and unconventional storytelling, Prabhakaran directed acclaimed films such as Nalaya Manithan, Puratchikkaaran, Asuran, and Rajali. His work often delved into themes of atheism, caste, and sexuality, setting him apart as a fearless voice in Tamil cinema.
The veteran filmmaker had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and placed on ventilator support just a day before his demise. His health had been deteriorating for some time, and his passing marks the end of an era in socially conscious and provocative filmmaking in the Tamil film industry.
His mortal remains will be kept at his residence in Valasaravakkam, Chennai, from Saturday evening to Sunday afternoon for the public to pay their respects. The cremation is scheduled for Sunday evening and will be a private ceremony attended by close friends and family members.
