Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu

In a notable shift in diplomatic tone, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu hailed India as his country’s “closest and most trusted partner,” during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to the island nation. The remarks, made at the Presidential Office in Malé, signal a move away from Muizzu’s earlier stance when he spearheaded the ‘India Out’ campaign.

President Muizzu expressed deep appreciation for India’s consistent support, particularly highlighting its role as the Maldives’ “First Responder” in times of crisis. He commended the wide-ranging bilateral cooperation between the two nations—spanning security, trade, healthcare, education, and infrastructure—stating that it positively impacts the daily lives of Maldivian citizens. He also hosted an official banquet in Prime Minister Modi’s honour and praised his leadership.

During the high-level talks, the two leaders explored new avenues for collaboration in areas such as climate action, development, healthcare, and capacity building. Emphasising the importance of regional security, both leaders agreed on the need to deepen defence and maritime cooperation under the existing framework of the Colombo Security Conclave.
