Russia has firmly rejected US President Donald Trump’s recent threats of increased tariffs and sanctions, stating that such actions will not derail the country’s geopolitical course or its deepening ties with the Global South.
In a sharp response, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that Washington’s pressure tactics are “politically motivated” and rooted in “neocolonial ambitions” aimed at maintaining control over emerging economies.
“No duties, restrictions or threats from the United States can alter the natural course of history,” Zakharova asserted during a press briefing. She emphasized that Russia’s partnerships with BRICS countries remain strong and that Moscow continues to pursue a truly multipolar global order based on sovereign equality.
The remarks came in the backdrop of President Trump’s pledge to raise tariffs on India over its continued imports of Russian crude oil. The U.S. administration has accused India of purchasing discounted Russian oil and allegedly reselling it at a profit on the global market.
Russia, however, maintains that its global partnerships, particularly within BRICS, are resilient and not subject to US influence or economic coercion.
