Total tariff on India now 50% due to Russian oil purchases

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, August 6, imposed an additional 25% trade tariff on Indian imports, raising the total levy to 50%. The move comes in response to India’s continued purchase of oil from Russia, despite earlier warnings from the United States.

The new tariffs, signed into effect via an Executive Order, will take effect 21 days from now, on August 27.

This action follows the initial 25% tariff that was introduced on August 1, in retaliation for India’s tariffs on US goods. On Tuesday, Trump had escalated pressure on New Delhi, cautioning that further tariffs would be imposed within 24 hours if India did not reconsider its oil trade with Moscow.

By announcing the new levies, Trump has followed through on his warning, further straining trade ties between the two nations.
