Nagaland Governor La Ganesan passed away on Friday evening, August 15, at the age of 80. He died at 6:23 pm at Apollo Hospital in Chennai, where he had been undergoing treatment since August 8 after collapsing at his residence in T. Nagar and suffering a head injury.
A veteran BJP and RSS leader, Ganesan had a long political career, serving as Governor of Manipur (2021–2023) and holding additional charge as Governor of West Bengal in 2022. He assumed office as the 21st Governor of Nagaland on February 20, 2023.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute, describing him as a “devout nationalist” who worked tirelessly to strengthen the BJP in Tamil Nadu and promote Tamil culture. “Pained by the passing of Nagaland Governor Thiru La. Ganesan Ji. He will be remembered as a devout nationalist, who dedicated his life to service and nation-building. He worked hard to expand the BJP across Tamil Nadu. He was deeply passionate about Tamil culture too. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. Om Shanti.,” Modi wrote on X.
Born on February 16, 1945, in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, Ganesan began his career as a Revenue Settlement Inspector before becoming a full-time RSS pracharak. He later rose through the BJP ranks in Tamil Nadu and served as a Rajya Sabha MP from Madhya Pradesh.
