The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, August 20, passed the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, paving the way for setting up a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati with capital support of Rs 550 crore from the Union government. The Opposition staged a walkout during the proceedings, but the bill was cleared a day after it was passed in the Lok Sabha. This will be the 22nd IIM in the country and the second in the Northeast after Shillong.
Replying to the debate, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted that this is the ninth IIM established under the Narendra Modi government in the last decade. He said the investment of Rs 555 crore for IIM Guwahati reflects the Centre’s commitment to the region’s development and expressed gratitude to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for pushing the proposal.
Pradhan added that the new institution would boost educational and economic opportunities for Assam and the wider Northeast. He emphasized that the Northeast has been receiving focused attention under the Modi government and asserted that IIM Guwahati would emerge as an institution of national importance, further strengthening the region’s role in India’s growth story.
