Vijay, who will lead Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) into its first electoral battle in Tamil Nadu next year, called on voters to consider him their representative in every constituency

Actor-turned-politician Vijay on Thursday, August 21, sent out a strong message to political rivals, declaring that his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), will contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections without forming alliances with either the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) or the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Addressing a packed rally in Madurai, Vijay drew loud cheers from supporters when he said, “A lion is always a lion.” The remark, widely seen as a signal of independence, underlined his resolve to establish TVK as a distinct political force in the state.

Vijay, one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars, formally launched his political outfit earlier this year. Since then, he has been touring across Tamil Nadu, drawing massive crowds and stirring conversations about a potential realignment of state politics. His emphasis on governance reforms, youth empowerment, and corruption-free politics has found resonance among young voters.

By firmly rejecting alliances with both the ruling DMK and the BJP-led NDA, Vijay positioned TVK as an alternative for voters seeking a break from traditional Dravidian politics. “We will walk our own path. We are not here to be the ‘B team’ of anyone,” he said at the rally.

Political analysts say Vijay’s move is calculated to preserve his outsider image. “In Tamil Nadu, credibility often comes from standing apart from established power blocs. Vijay’s statement will appeal to first-time voters who are disillusioned with existing parties,” said political commentator R. Narayanaswamy.

However, challenges remain. Without the backing of seasoned political machinery, TVK faces an uphill battle in mobilizing grassroots cadres across 234 constituencies. While Vijay’s star power ensures visibility, converting that into votes will test his organisational capacity.

The actor’s political debut has already unsettled major players. The DMK, led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, continues to command strong support, while the AIADMK and BJP are attempting to consolidate opposition space. Vijay’s entry could split votes, particularly in urban centres and among the youth demographic.

As the state gears up for elections next year, Thursday’s rally in Madurai marked a turning point in Vijay’s campaign. With his categorical rejection of alliances, the actor has staked TVK’s claim to be a third front — a gamble that could reshape the Tamil Nadu political landscape.
