A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late on August 31, leaving at least 800 people dead and more than 2,500 injured, according to Taliban authorities.
The epicentre was recorded in the mountainous Kunar and Nangarhar provinces near Jalalabad, where villages were flattened, homes destroyed, and landslides blocked key roads. Rescue teams are struggling to reach affected areas due to damaged infrastructure and ongoing flooding.
The Taliban government has appealed for urgent international aid. Relief efforts are being coordinated by the United Nations, the Afghan Red Crescent, and regional partners, though access to remote areas remains a major challenge.
The death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue.
