Russian President Vladimir Putin cautioned Washington against attempting to pressure India and China with tariffs and sanctions, stressing that such an approach would not work. “You cannot talk to India or China in that way,” he said, following his participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit and a military parade in China.
Putin criticized the Trump administration for using economic tools as a means to undermine two of Asia’s strongest powers. Referring to India and China as “partners,” he argued that the U.S. tariff regime was designed to weaken the leadership of these countries and disrupt their economic influence on the global stage.
Highlighting their strength, Putin noted that India, with its 1.5 billion people, and China, with its vast economic power, operate under their own domestic political systems and laws. He questioned how the leadership of such major nations could be expected to respond when threatened with punishment, suggesting that Washington’s strategy risks backfiring.
