Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday, September 10, confirmed that India and the United States are engaged in “active dialogue” to establish a free trade agreement (FTA).
Speaking at an industry event, Goyal said discussions are aimed at building a “balanced and win-win” framework that benefits businesses and consumers on both sides. He added that India is also holding talks with New Zealand for a bilateral trade deal and has made “substantial progress” with the European Union, finalizing over 60 percent of the FTA chapters.
The remarks come a day after U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated that Washington and New Delhi are working to resolve trade barriers and expressed optimism about a successful outcome. Trump said he looks forward to speaking with Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon.
Both leaders have repeatedly described India and the U.S. as “close friends” and “natural partners,” signaling strong political will to push the agreement forward.
Industry observers say a comprehensive FTA could boost cooperation in sectors including agriculture, digital trade, manufacturing, and services, potentially unlocking billions in bilateral commerce.
