Supreme Court says Bihar’s SIR exercise will be scrapped if any illegality is found in the Election Commission’s methodology.

The Supreme Court on Monday, September 15, said it would scrap the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar if any illegality is found in the methodology adopted by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi said the court is proceeding with the assumption that the ECI, as a constitutional body, has acted according to law and mandatory procedures.

The judges also refused to give piecemeal rulings, observing that their final verdict could have wider implications beyond Bihar.

The matter has been posted for final hearing on October 7.
