Chris Woakes retires from international cricket after 15-year England career

England all-rounder Chris Woakes has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 36, concluding a distinguished 15-year career with the national team. Woakes made the announcement on September 29, 2025, following his absence from the squad for the upcoming Ashes series against Australia. He had last featured for England during the Test match against India at The Oval in August 2025.

In a heartfelt statement, Woakes expressed immense pride in representing England, stating, “Playing for England was something I aspired to do since I was a kid dreaming in the back garden, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have lived out those dreams.” He highlighted the honour of wearing the Three Lions and sharing the field with teammates over the past 15 years, many of whom have become lifelong friends.

Woakes’ career includes 62 Test matches, 122 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and 33 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). He was part of England’s victorious teams in the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. In Test cricket, he concluded with 192 wickets at an average of 29.61, along with one century and seven half-centuries. Notably, he achieved the rare feat of being listed on all three honours boards at Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Despite his retirement from international cricket, Woakes intends to continue playing county cricket and explore opportunities in franchise leagues. He remains a respected figure in English cricket, known for his skill, determination, and sportsmanship.
