At least six people have lost their lives in Darjeeling district, West Bengal, following a landslide in Mirik, officials confirmed on Saturday, October 5. The disaster has also caused the collapse of the Dudia Iron Bridge, a key link between the hill towns of Mirik and Kurseong, further disrupting connectivity amid severe weather conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Darjeeling and nearby districts, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall until Monday morning. Several areas have already been affected by landslides, including Hussain Khola along National Highway 110 near Kurseong, where roads have been buried under mud and debris, hampering rescue and relief efforts.
The continuous downpour has created flood-like situations in parts of North Bengal, with rivers such as the Teesta and Mal rising well above the danger mark. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, warning residents to stay vigilant as the extreme weather persists and travel remains hazardous.
