In a significant political comeback, Hagrama Mohilary, president of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), was sworn in as the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) in Kokrajhar district, Assam, on Sunday, October 5. The oath-taking ceremony, held at the Bodoland Secretariat Field amid heavy rain, also saw former minister Rihon Daimary take oath as the Deputy Chief Executive Member, marking the formation of the new council government.
The ceremony was attended by dignitaries including Assam Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, cabinet ministers, and Tripura’s Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, underscoring the political significance of the event in Northeast India. The occasion highlighted BPF’s return to power after losing control of the BTC to the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance in the previous elections.
In the recent BTC elections, the BPF secured a commanding mandate, winning 28 of the 40 council seats, while the UPPL won seven and the BJP five. The Congress failed to win any seats. Following the declaration of results by the Assam State Election Commission, a BPF delegation led by Mohilary met Governor Acharya on Saturday to formally stake claim to form the new council government in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
