Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan Amir Khan Muttaqi addresses a press conference, in New Delhi.

During a press conference in New Delhi, Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi faced criticism for excluding women journalists from attending the event. The Editors Guild of India labeled the incident as “deeply troubling,” emphasizing the necessity for equal representation in media interactions. Similarly, the Indian Women Press Corps condemned the exclusion, calling it a regressive step that undermines the progress made in women’s participation in journalism.

In response to the backlash, the Afghan Embassy extended an invitation to women journalists for a subsequent press meet. However, the initial exclusion had already raised concerns about the Afghan government’s commitment to gender equality in media representation. Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, expressed their disapproval, urging the Indian government to address the issue diplomatically.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges regarding women’s rights and representation in Afghanistan, especially in the context of international engagements. It underscores the need for continued advocacy and action to ensure that women journalists have equal access and opportunities in all professional domains.
