MTV has announced it will shut down five of its iconic music channels – MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live – by December 31, 2025, marking the end of an era for the network that has been a defining part of music and youth culture for over four decades.
The decision comes amid changing viewing habits, with digital platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Spotify increasingly dominating music consumption. The move was also influenced by the recent merger between Paramount Global and Skydance Media, which triggered a $500 million global cost-cutting initiative.
Despite the closures, MTV HD will continue to operate, primarily airing reality TV shows such as Geordie Shore and Naked Dating UK. This marks a significant departure from MTV’s original focus on music videos, which had long been a staple for fans.
