CJI Gavai recommends Justice Surya Kant as his successor

Chief Justice of India BR Gavai has recommended the name of Justice Surya Kant as his successor, paving the way for the senior Supreme Court judge to become the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI).

Justice Gavai, who is set to retire on November 23, 2025, sent the recommendation to the Central Government in accordance with the established convention of appointing the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court as the next Chief Justice.

Once approved by the Centre, Justice Surya Kant will take oath as the next Chief Justice of India. He is expected to hold office until February 9, 2027.

Justice Surya Kant, a former Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, was elevated to the Supreme Court in May 2019. Known for his balanced judicial approach and contributions in constitutional and administrative law, he has authored several notable judgments during his tenure on the apex court bench.

The recommendation marks the beginning of the transition process at the Supreme Court, ensuring continuity and adherence to judicial convention in the country’s top judiciary.
