Renowned flautist Dipak Sarma, aged 57, died on November 3 in Chennai. He breathed his last at 6:15 am while undergoing advanced treatment.

Renowned Assamese flautist Dipak Sarma passed away early Monday morning, November 3, in Chennai after weeks of critical illness. The 57-year-old musician, celebrated for his soulful flute renditions and his deep contribution to Assam’s musical heritage, breathed his last around 6:15 a.m. while undergoing advanced medical treatment. He had been battling chronic liver disease for the past few years.

A native of Panigaon village in Nalbari district, Sarma was initially admitted to a hospital in Guwahati before being airlifted to Chennai as his condition deteriorated. A disciple of legendary flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Sarma worked closely with iconic artists like Bhupen Hazarika and Zubeen Garg, contributing to numerous memorable compositions.

Condolences poured in from across the cultural and political spectrum. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed grief, stating that Dipak Sarma popularised the flute in Assamese music and made an “immense contribution” to the state’s cultural identity.


“Deeply anguished to learn about the untimely demise of eminent flutist Dipak Sarma, who has contributed immensely towards Assamese music and popularised the flute as a musical instrument. My sincere condolences to the bereaved family members and well-wishers. Om Shanti,” the Chief Minister wrote on X.

Musicians, cultural organisations and admirers remembered Sarma for his ability to stir deep emotions through his music and for his unwavering commitment to preserving and promoting Assamese musical traditions.
